Nordic Yards, builder of technologically challenging and innovative special ships, has received an order from Norilsk Nickel, one of the ten biggest companies in Russia, to build a special tanker. The Russian mining company has placed an order for the ice-breaking Arctic Tanker “Nordic AT 19” which will be mainly deployed on the northern Russian shipping routes.
Specially constructed to cope with year-round deployment in Arctic waters, the vessel of the type “Nordic AT 19“ will be able to break through ice thicknesses up to 1.5 metres. At some 170 metres in length, with a beam of approximately
23 meters, and a load capacity of 18,500 tons, the tanker will provide a cargo tank capacity of over 20,600 cubic meters. The diesel-electric machinery will drive a 360 degree rotating gondola propeller. Open water speed is 15.3 knots. The vessel with the Arctic ice class ARC7 is designed to cope with harsh weather conditions, with temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius.
